Hello all,
I am looking for some advice, I have found a few used bikes that I am looking to get, I wanted to spend around $500.00 for a good used bike.
I want to know what you guys think, should I grab one of these or keep on looking through the the winter?
Thanks in advance for the help.. I believe I take a size 56.. the guy at the cycle shop said with a Gaint I'd take a Small, or just maybe a medium,

  1. I really think you need more info. The price is right but the components are a big deal. Is it a compact crank. What speed..10, 11-25? This will effect your gears with climbing ect.

Hard to make a vote on this one. Do you know what size bike you need?

email me at : gottarun472@gmail.com if I can help further.

  2. That's tough... Without knowing more, I'd vote for bike #2. But maybe bike #3 could be good because you'd have extra $$$ left to upgrade components.

    Good luck!!

  3. Not sure I can be much help here... without knowing more, I'd go with the newest bike (so #1) only because it'll have newer technology. The most important thing is to buy a bike that fits. A good bike shop can fit you, and I believe you can get a decent entry-level bike for $5-700. If your bike doesn't fit, you won't ride it and any amount you spend will be a waste. I think Bicycling magazine has an online buyer's guide. Might be worth checking out.

  4. Dude you can get a new entry level bike with ok componets for about $500 ( cheaper if you use bike direct .com) I'm looking at the pics and I'm likeing #2 especially because Rolf wheels are expensive. I would email the owners of bikes #1 and 2 about the componets. if Bike #2 is using either Shimano 105 or Shimano Ultegra I'd take it in a heart beat because new bikes with those componets go for atleat $1k retail.

  6. I like Robin would want more information but if I'd have to pick, I'd with bike #2-sounds like this might be the best choice.

    Great blog!

  7. Thanks for thinking I'm an expert.

I would pass on all three. If your goal is triathlon, buy a triathlon bike. The main difference is the seat angle and if you are going aero (you need aero bars)it will be more comfortable.

Now on the other hand, if all you want to do is complete the triathlon and it is under an Olympic distance, then the roadie bike might be good for you. Then you can cruise around at other times in the upright position in more comfort (a dual purpose bike). Go with comfort on that choice.

If you want a tri bike, look on Craig's list (if you have it) in your area. Also, go to your local bike shops to see if they have any. Or, do what I do, go on ebay.

You need to know your size. If you are between 5"10" and 6'1" (normal leg inseam 32" or so) 56cm is probably your bike. Taller you go up to 58cm or 60cm Shorter go down 54cm.

Make an offer on ebay to one that looks good. Their actually is one now by pete_m_leeds for (asking) $1300 that he will never get. You could offer him $650 and he would probably take it. It's all set up and ready to go

    Hope that helps.

    Keep tri ing!!!

  8. You know, if you want to wait 8 weeks for an IMFL proven bike, I plan on selling mine for a newer model after the race. It's a Cervelo P2SL 2007 model and I should get in the range of $750 for it.
    Let me know.
