It is so helpful to have the ability to breath on both sides, especially in open water swimming, so that you can adjust and breath on only one side if necessary because of sunlight, wave direction, other swimmers, etc. It is also good for your form because it keeps your shoulder and neck muscles working evenly. I swam competitvely in hight school and I naturally breath on my left. Now I have to force myself to breath on the right too.
